Cherry Buns

A firm favourite for both kids and adults, takes you back to when Grandma used to bake!

Get the kids involved in making these, they love a bit of mixing and getting their hands into the sticky mixture.

350g plain flour
Good pinch salt
100g cold butter, cubed
100g golden caster sugar
2tsp baking powder
2 large eggs
25g milk
150g glace cherries or if in season ripe cherries, chopped
Egg wash for glazing
Caster sugar for dusting


  • Preheat the oven to 190°C
  • In a large mixing bowl sift the flour, salt and baking powder.
  • Add the butter and using your fingertips rub the butter into the flour mixture until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  • Add the chopped cherries and the sugar and blend in.
  • In a separate bowl, add the egg and the milk and whisk together.
  • Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and mix together using a wooden spoon until the mixture forms stiff dough.
  • Divide the dough into10 small balls, flattening lightly with the back of a tablespoon.
  • Place on a large lightly oiled baking sheet.
  • Brush each bun with some of the melted butter and sprinkle over some caster sugar.
  • Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
